Hiring a web designer shouldn’t end with you texting your private login credentials and sending endless 2-Auth codes to each other's phones. Not only is this time consuming, but it also puts your passwords and billing information at risk.
Modern platforms have built-in "Contributor" settings that let a designer jump in to your account and do the heavy lifting without ever seeing your credit card info or locking you out of your own domain.
Here is exactly how guide my clients as a Montana web designer on the biggest platforms.
Wix: Invite a Collaborator
- Head to your Wix Dashboard and find Settings on the left.
- Select Roles & Permissions.
- Hit Invite Collaborator.
- Plug in your designer’s email and pick a role.
- Administrator is typically best, but Website Manager works too
- Click Send Invite.
Showit: Contributor Access
- Open your site in the Showit Design App.
- Click your Account Name (bottom left corner).
- Select Manage Account, which will open a new browser tab.
- Find Contributor Access.
- Enter the designer’s email. They’ll get a notification to "accept" the site into their own library.
Squarespace: Invite a Contributor
- From your Home Menu, go to Settings > Permissions (or System > Permissions in the latest interface).
- Click Invite Contributor.
- Enter their name and email.
- Choose the level: Administrator is typically best
- Hit Invite and wait for the "Accepted" status to show up in your list.
Shopify: Add a Collaborator
- Find and send your designer your internal Shopify URL (it ends with .myshopify.com).
- Find and send your designer your Collaborator Code
- Go to Settings > Users and Permissions.
- Scroll down to the Collaborators section.
- Look for the 4-digit Collaborator Request Code
- Approve the Request: Your designer will send a request from their end. You’ll get an email and a notification in your Shopify admin.
- Review Permissions: When you click "Review Request," you can choose exactly what they can see (e.g., "Manage Themes" and "Products," but perhaps not "Orders" or "Customer Data").
- Accept: Once you hit "Accept Request," they’re in.
